Story From China

Raushanfikr Muthahhari
Student of UGM
Internship in Wuhan, China

This internship is named "Hands on China", hosted by AIESEC HUST Wuhan China. HOC Projects consist of several volunteering activities initiated by local students and volunteers. Exchange participant from different countries who have experienced in volunteering activities came to this project and manage several projects conducted by Local Committee and Local Chinese Volunteer organization. We came to help Jeje, a 15 years old boy who suffered the worse hydrocephalus disease in China, to give him education and create a charity in order to make him able to have a surgery. With the help of local volunteers, we also came to Hospital twice a week for managing volunteering works for children who suffer blood cancer. There are also several visits to “Old people house” with local volunteers to learn the volunteering activities conducted by Chinese youth for the granny. In the middle of project, we came to girl named Alaina, who have a physical coordination disability, to motivate and play with her.

Living Conditions
I arrived at Wuhan in the middle of winter, when the temperature is between 0-10 degrees. We must adapted to this condition that totally different with Indonesia.
The foods in Wuhan have so many variances, because it lies in central of china, which is influenced by every different part of China. We can also found cuisine from all over the world here. Don't worry if you are Muslim, because the Xingjian Muslim restaurant is lies everywhere here. How's average living expense for daily live here? I could compare it with Jogjakarta city because it's cheap price of food and other goods.
Here, you also could meet friendly local people and students from all over the world, to learn their language and culture, work together, and share ideas within them.

Why Exchange?
AIESEC Exchange opportunities are unlike any other exchange program that usually lies on Universities. It is because this program could make us taste and feel the truly living condition of other countries, different cultures, and global working conditions. It was just an incredible experience. Apart from what we learned directly from the volunteering activities, the experience that changes you the most is to be around people from different cultures, and what you learn from them sometimes changes your point of view. Being working in volunteering project here also could inspire us to do the same things back in our home, bringing new knowledge and spirit onto what do we do in Indonesia. If you want to broaden your perspective, learn about life, and became success, just taste, feel, and look about the life in the other countries. I would recommend you to join AIESEC Global Exchange Program. If there's a will, there's a way.
